Hikaye Metni
Jacob Marley is in the room. He is carrying heavy chains, which is a part of his punishment because he robbed the widows and swindled the poor when he was alive. He steps on a cane and falls down.
M (Marley): Gosh. It is slippery.
Scrooge is afraid of him because he doesn’t understand that it is Marley.
M: Scrooge, don’t you recognize me? I was your partner, Jacob Marley.
S: Marley, it is you.
M: Remember when I was alive, I robbed the widows and swindled the poor?
S: Yes, and all in the same day. You had class, Jacob.
For a moment, Jacob Marley feels proud. But then he understands that it is a mistake.
M: No! I was wrong, and so as punishment, I have to carry these heavy chains for ever!
Meanwhile, Scrooge is not listening to Marley. He is interested in a moneybox that is linked to Jacob’s chains. Then Marley shouts at him:
M: And the same thing will happen to you, Scrooge!
That means Scrooge will have the same punishment as Jacob. He will carry chains because he is a bad man; he loves money.
Scrooge is afraid.
S: No it can’t! It mustn’t! Help me, Jacob!
M: Tonight, You will be visited by three spirits (three spirits will visit you). Listen to them. Do what they say. Or your chains will be heavier than mine (=my chains)
Then Jacob leaves.
M: Farewell Scrooge.
When Jacob is gone, Scrooge searches the room with a candle in his hand. His looks into the chimney and then under the table, looking for spirits. When he finds none, he is angry. Now he doesn’t believe in the spirits.
S: Spirits? Humbug!
And he goes to bed.
At 2 o’clock a.m., the first spirit appears. It is a little man. It is the Ghost (=spirit) of Christmas Past.
