Hikaye Metni
It is London, 24 December 1843. It is the Christmas Eve.
Scrooge is a businessman. He is extremely mean (=He loves money. He doesn’t like spending it). He is walking on the street. A beggar sees him and asks for some money.
Beggar: Give a penny for the poor, sir.
S (Scrooge): Bah!
Looking at the sign in front of the office, Scrooge speaks about Marley. Jacob Marley is dead. He was Scrooge’s business partner. He was also mean and dishonest. Scrooge says, “Jacob Marley. Dead seven years today. (www.bebekce.gen.tr) He was a good businessman. He robbed from the widows and swindled the poor. In his will he left me enough money for his tombstone.” (www.bebekce.gen.tr) Jacob Marley wanted a tombstone and he left money in his will for this reason but Scrooge didn’t buy him a tombstone because he didn’t want to spend the money. So, he threw Jacob’s dead body into the sea.
Now Scrooge is in the office. Crachit is his clerk. He is a poor man. Scrooge gives him little money. Now he is about to add some coal to the stove.
S: What are you doing with that piece of coal?
C ( Crachit): I was just trying to thaw out the ink
S: You used a piece last week!
Scrooge hits Crachit’s hand. And the piece of coal falls into the bucket.
S: Now get on with your work, Crachit
C: Tomorrow is Christmas. Can I have half the day off, Mr. Scrooge?
S: Well, yes you can. But I will give you half a day’s pay. I pay you two shillings a day?
S: Oh yes, I gave you that raise three years ago
C: Yes sir, when I started doing your laundry
S: Here is another bundle of shirts for you.
(Crachit washes his dirty clothes)
And he throws the bundle at Crachit who catches it.
C: Yes sir.
Then Scrooge’s only relative, his nephew, comes to the office and shouts merry Christmas. But Scrooge is not very happy about it. He says, “Bah, humbug!”
N (Nephew): Merry Christmas, Uncle Scrooge
S: What’s so merry about it? It’s just another work day.
C: Sir Christmas is a time for giving. A time to be with one’s family
S: I say ‘Bah humbug’
N: I say ‘Merry Christmas’
Now Crachit is clapping his hands for the nephew. Scrooge looks at him angrily.
S: Crachit, what are you doing?
C: I was just trying to keep my hands warm, sir
S: And what are you doing here, Nephew?
N: I’ve come to invite you to Christmas dinner
S: I can’t eat that stuff. Now get out!
Then two strangers walk into the office. Scrooge is happy to see them. He thinks they are customers.
S: What can I do for you two gentlemen?
Strangers: We’re collecting money for the poor
S: If we give money to the poor, they won’t be poor anymore. If they’re not poor anymore, then you would be out of a job. Don’t ask me to put you out of a job, not on Christmas Eve.
After sending the strangers out, Scrooge talks to Crachit.
S: What’s this world coming to, Crachit? You work all your life to get money and people want you to give it away.
Seeing that it is seven o’clock, Crachit prepares to go home. Scrooge, however, looks at his own watch and says, “Two minutes to seven”. Crachit begins to work again but Scrooge says,
S: Never mind those two minutes. You may go now.
C: Thank you sir. You are so kind.
S: Don’t thank me. Just go, but be here earlier the next day.
C: I will. Merry Christmas to you sir.
At nine o’clock Scrooge leaves the office and goes home. In front of the door of his house, however, there is a surprise for him. The knocker of the door, a lion head, turns into Marley, his dead partner, and it shouts, “Scroooooge!”.
Scrooge is very afraid and he runs into the house. When inside, however, he thinks it was only a dream because of the stress of the day. Then, as he walks upstairs, Marley’s shadow follows him. Scrooge feels it and turns back suddenly. But the shadow disappears. Scrooge is very afraid and he runs into the room and locks the door. However, someone knocks the door. Then Marley’s ghost walks in.
